Who I Wish You to Be: A Poem to My Future Spouse
I, with my inability to see the future
don’t know who you are
Your name, your face
Nor your ambitions
But I know who I hope you to be
A person
Mortal and bound to this Earth
Who won’t let the rainy days cloud his vision of a beautiful world
Stronger than I, but soft, and able to voice his vulnerability
I don’t want perfection
I want the one inside
I don’t know who you are
But I know who I hope you to be
I want our life to be worry free
Spending our days in perfect twilight
But I know that won’t happen
We’ll fight like every couple, but in our hearts
Our torn, aching hearts
We know that everything will be okay
I don’t know who you are
But I know who I hope you to be
I hope we meet by a setting sun
A blissful breeze
You’ll smile at me, and I’ll feel at home
Even if we’re miles from everything we know
And from that point forward, we’ll spend the days together
Long and thoughtful conversations
Silly breakdowns of boisterous laughter
Where we’ll know everything will work out
I don’t know who you are
But I know who I hope for you to be
I hope our connection grows
We’ll dream of a life together
Through the struggles of young adulthood
This dream will remain deep in our minds
A distant thought that brings the happiness of our hearts to light
A house together, a life of our own
I don’t know who you are
But I know who I hope you to be
I want something to be known by you
And ones who pass us by
Perfect strangers, ones with different lives
That I’ll love you through it all
When the sun rises, yet falls
And problems become unwavering and stagnant
I’ll still be there to assure you of the beauty of this life
As you would for me
A warmth, justified only to my heart
I don’t know who you are
But I know who I hope you to be
