They had been the best of friends

Living in their small pretends

Her rainbow bear, his orange cat

Were somewhat symbols of this past

Together in their pirate ship

(or in a kingdom if they wished)

They sailed across a sea of grass

With paper hats and sweater flags

Popsicles of sweet grape ice

And trying to climb the metal slides

A skinned knee, a small laugh

An island only they could have

And when he left before the light

To brush his teeth and say goodnight

She stood below and from afar

Sang "twinkle twinkle" to her star

Regardless of how coarse or bad

Her voice would get, he'd still be glad

He used to listen with a smile...

I haven't seen him in a while.

This is for a brief but very special friend of mine, the first one I ever remember having. Sadly we lost touch a long time ago, but if I could see him again this poem is what I'd say.
