Looking down upon death below,

Heart in his mouth -onwards must go.

Sun Above Glaring at him

For bird’s is the sky,

The heaven’s but

firmament all at once

Leaving-he jumps.

At first It feels you must fall

But bird-like wings that

sprout from each side,

Hold you aloft, atlast he flies!

Heart Throbbing, Eyes Gazing,

Words lost too cannot describe the flight

Wind rushing past him,

The world ‘neath A passing blur.

But soon, as nose dips down,

Death approaches,

As he dives down

Twisting and turning now

The world’s downside up

Whistling through his ears,

The final rush now

Eyes shut tight,

He crashes, with pain

The first pilot dies.

The author's comments:

This is a short poem that depicts the final flight of Otto Lilienthal, who was the first well documented person to fly with the help of gliders. His flights, whose pictures were published in magazines and newspapers showed that human flight was a practical possibility. He is known as the pioneer of aviation.
