the cowardly lion sleeps well at night
the cowardly lion sleeps well at night
ruby-red droopy eyes with a wide mouth
full of crooked teeth i can smell your recreancy
just by opening up the fridge to find
a six-pack of distractions, hotdogs, and
salsberry steak.
the lion likes to shake
the cracks in the walls
with his mighty roar
he likes to creep the halls
sink his teeth and bare his claws
and devour his prey (and i ask
god, that my sweat does not find your
abysmal belly attractive.)
the cowardly lion’s stench wafts through
the nose of game with industrial fumes
(play dead play dead play dead)
but as soon as his slumber
has come to a closing and the sunlight paints
wrinkles and stardust on cratered cheeks
perhaps, the cowardly lion, isn’t a lion at all.
