What We Plan to do With Our Wild and Precious Lives
(After Mary Oliver)
We are adults,
Still sometimes viewed as children.
While some think us children are foolish or naive,
Others see what we have planned to do,
With our wild and precious lives.
One will become a leader,
Providing hope and opportunity,
In the darkest of countries.
One will become a mother,
Showing her children how to be kind,
How to offer a gentle hand to all they shall meet.
One will become a musician,
Inspiring the hearts of young souls,
As they share the rhythm that is their life story.
One will become a traveler,
Seeking adventure and finding beauty,
In places unknown by many.
One will become a father,
Showing his children bravery,
And helping find the strength to fight off the villains in life.
One will become a doctor,
Healing those who are ill,
Proving that miracles do exist.
One will become a teacher,
Feeling as much pride as the students do,
When they learn that no matter what, their best will always be enough.
One will become an artist,
Pouring their heart and soul into a canvas,
Freeing what they kept inside.
Each one of us has a dream
A hope,
A path,
That we were meant to follow.
So please,
Do not doubt what we have planned,
For our wild and precious lives.
