They call it “Happy Town.”
No one is homeless.
No one is depressed.
No one dies.
There is no such thing as pain.
Everyone is happy.
This is “Happy Town.”

They are all best friends.
They love one another.
Things are shared amongst each other.
What a Happy Town!

Happy Town.
Kids learn about love and peace,
not about war.
This is Happy Town.

But in this town,
under the ground,
There was an old man.
This man might as well have been a pile of bones.
Parts of him were even swollen.
Is this Happy Town?

“We must have entered another world.
Let’s turn back.”
The old man screams for help.
Could this be Happy Town?

We face the town officials--
stuttering to explain.
“It’s to maintain happiness.”
They approached the door of the cellar.
We thought he would help the man,
but he closed his eyes and shut the door.

We heard the old man scream something
This is not “Happy Town,”
This is Omelas.

The author's comments:

This piece was very much inspired by the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." I would encouragee readers to please read the short story and then read the poem because the meaning of the poem would only make the best sense. Thank you!
