Bright Montana Night
It was fall in Montana, on an oh-so-brisk and cold night
You could see the Friday night lights from a mile away
About 30 degrees as the game was played
In the back of the stands were 6 good friends
I had a Carhartt on and big, clunky muck boots
A very young relationship between Wyatt and I
He held my hand for the very first time that night
He wrapped his arm around me to keep me warm
In the seats adjacent, sat Maddie and Ben
They had recently rekindled an old flame
Ben coached wyatt to act and be cool
Maddie, Emily and I gossiped in the restroom
My lips chapped, I tried to find chapstick
Anna was there to see Jonathan play football
She proudly sported his white “away” football jersey
She could not get her mind off that boy
I similarly couldn’t stop looking at Wyatt
Emily cracked jokes in her normal fashion
My phone died, and mom was worried sick
That night remains a very vivid memory
Even after players graduated and Anna moved,
Wyatt and I still think about that time . . .
And smile
