Black and White Self-Portrait

They say change for the people you love

I want to change love for the people

But we hear and see love through the ears and eyes of another

We cannot see clearly

Our dirty perceptions are like the grime underneath your fingernails as they dig into your hands

It’s confusing as silent letters.

It’s as disturbing as our president.

It’s as perplexing as the way humans cover up their emotions and hide behind their screens

It’s harsh like the feel of skin on the back of your hand, tired from a day of work

It’s helpless like mother and children who wish to come in but are thrown in cages.

It’s contrived like the overused pile of words that is spoken too loudly at the store with things under glass

Thoughts come to us and overflow like a tiny green bucket that keeps refilling itself.

But not the thoughts we want

After a while, we cannot see ourselves in the mirror because of all these thoughts.

Even when we wipe away all the fog after showering

We will never see color

All I can see is the outline of my lips before they move

They look like they are smiling.

But I rarely see clearly.
