Where I'm From

I am from low income and poverty’

Loud gunshots and robbery,

Dirty shoes on power lines,

A neighborhood full of crime

I am from ramon noodles and hot sauce,

Coming out and seeing bums on the sidewalk,

I am from dirty clothes and dirty shoes,

And having to walk by myself to school,

I am from not having a car and having to walk,

Getting in trouble and coming home to a talk,

Having to get on the tarc for everything,

Hail, sleet, snow or rain!

I am from chicken and soul food,

From waking up for church on sunday,

Waking up for school early on monday,

I am from what you can call the slums,

I am from football and basketball,

I am from loud classrooms and halls,

I am from hard work and dedication,

I am from good teachers and education.
