Lantern Festival

A serene darkness fills the air

As the floating fire inflates in my hand

My dreams scrawled on the canvas

My hopes to be sent as a message to heaven

The air tugs at my lantern

Gradually pulling it away from my safe grip

The night reaches out its hand and grabs my lantern

Drawing out my thoughts to deliver to the world

Dots of light begin to rise all at once

Flaming dreams being released into the night

A synchronous display of our innermost emotions

As a sea of angelic light overcomes the sky

All around me are lanterns

Bright bulbs of incandescence take over my sight

As if angels have visited earth to collect our dreams

And are bringing them home to grant

As the floating stars rise from the earth

Into the endless abyss of dusk

The emotion of each individual person

Can be felt in the air

As if it has been let out from their bodies

And now belongs to the atmosphere

We all watch as our hearts float away into the night

And the feeling is unmistakable

This was more than just a lantern festival

This was magic and hope in its truest form

The author's comments:

I recently attended a Chinese Lantern Festival and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This inspired me to write how it made me feel, as though I was experiencing real magic as the lanterns drifted off into the night. This poem is my attempt at bringing that scene to life for others to see.
