The Storm

Sirens blare,

clouds consume the sky,

the absence of light casts a massive shadow

          leave and never come back

The biggest storm in centuries hits the small town in Florida

Rain plunges from the clouds and crashes against the ground,

powerlines tip over, tearing houses apart

the roads become rivers

Half sunk cars are submerged in water with opened windows like drowned eyes,

lightning breaks the clouds

          leave and never come back

Jake and his kids sit in the safety of their basement

knocking from the inside of his head is his wife’s absence

          leave and never come back

Remorse overtakes him

She is a lump in his throat over which

His voice cracks     just as his daughter’s facade breaks,

as lightning flashes across the window
