The Hopeless Romantic's Plea
I do not expect you
To pluck the stars from the sky
And put them all in a mason jar.
I do not want you
To kill every rose in this planet
In order to create the most beautiful bouquet.
I do not expect you
To light this world on fire with your torch
When I feel cold and I ask for warmth.
I do not want you
To bleed for me, to die for me
Like the movies always say.
I do not expect you
To spend hours inside of your tool shed building the sun
When the world becomes too dark.
Love, I ask for imperfection.
Give me bed heads and silly smiles.
Childish dreams and movie nights.
Love, be my companion
When the nights are long
And all I need is to be in your arms.

My inspiration to write this poem came from the romanticism of the "ideal relationship." In books, movies, tv shows, a relationship is only seen as perfect when the most extreme circumstances are met. In reality, relationships are not like that because humans are not perfect and we are all inevitably flawed. In an effort to convey such an idea (and to express a desire for a genuine relationship rather than a "flashy" one), I ended up writing this poem.
