The One and Only
As I stare across the black pavement
to the other side of the basketball court,
I see him--Freddie. His beach blonde
hair scoped across his face with his
blue eyes staring at me past his freckles.
I walk closer as I tightly grasp the bouquet of dandelions,
straighten my yellow sundress,
and flatten my blonde hair against my face while
humming the tune to the wedding procession.
Smiling across the net,
“the priest” grasps our hands together
as he slowly slides the tattered string
held together by a knot
up my ring finger; announcing
us husband and wife
to the sea of Kindergarteners.
“You may now kiss the bride”
and that is exactly what he did,
right before we started sprinting
with our hands still clasped together.
We were escaping the capture
from the teachers trying to tear us apart
like Romeo and Juliet.
Sending us to our death;
the principal's office.
