Unspoken Issues
America was built on the idea of freedom,
but in present day we seem to have forgotten those morals.
We’ve thrown these ideas away, like we don't need them.
Growing up in a sheltered community, I thought everyone had the same luxuries as me,
unaware there were kids with no home, no parents, no food to eat.
Not every kid gets a warm bed and good food,
or two parents who are always there and love them too.
Yet America’s focus is not on the real good and bad,
instead we focus on trends and fads.
People are being killed because of their race.
These people had lives and a family to face.
LGBTQ couples are scared to hold hands in the public eye,
because society has told them to stop and hide.
Women are being silenced and it’s unfair.
They shouldn’t have to walk down the street worried and scared.
Muslims no longer show their faith and choices,
instead they fear harassment and mute their voices.
The disabled are being dismissed,
their potential discarded and left adrift .
America is not living up to it’s design.
We no longer establish justice, or care enough to write outside the lines,
or stop the stereotyping and unfair treatment.
America has given up, but we’re not defeated.
Modern American is the next generation,
and we have the power to change and fix this nation.
We can rise up and build this country to what it was made to be,
a place of freedom, peace, and people living happily.
America was not made to be perfect, but we can’t settle for its current state.
We must make an effort and have faith.
Our founding fathers deserve to be proud,
we can no longer silence the strong voices of America, we need to hear them loud.
The people of modern America will not keep their heads down.

I titled this piece unspoken issues because I feel like their are many silent disputes in America. A lot of problems are kept silent out of fear of offending others, judgement, and harassment. I write a lot of personal poetry, but in this poem I really wanted to put myself in the situation of different minorities.
