The Meaning of Fall

Fall means change, the weather goes from

An intense heat that drowns

To sharp winds that tears clothes apart.

It’s not only the climate but the whole world,

It matures from an eternal vacation filled

With impatience and carelessness,

To an unequivocal manifestation

Of the collective lifestyles that fill the world.

Change envelops the world and ensues vicissitudes.

The man who, yesterday and the day before,

Wandered down the street at a nadir

With no home and an uncertain future.

Now, struts, full of vivacity and

With the steady footing that comes from

The assurance of having faith in himself.

This man heads towards the future,

With an indomitable spirit and blazing eyes

That focus on his fated horizon.

The schoolgirl that sobbed through her nights;

Heartbroken and lamenting,

Reading the love letters she was left with.

Over-analyzing every word and mark

And wondering if they were a sign.

Today, she’s looking back with a smile;

Certain that she is reprieved from the blame,

That she wasn’t in love.

That it was simply a step towards a better self

And a brighter day where she’ll find her happiness.

I see this as I walk the streets;

The man with the bright eyes

And the girl with the confident smile;

I see them but they don’t see me.

I don’t exist where they do,

They’re a different entity from me;

I can’t help but feel that I want to be like them.

They move with an allure;

Captivating me,

Inviting me,

And in this season of change,

giving me a sense of belonging.

I see them as Fall;

As the cutting winds,

As the dimming nights,

As the falling leaves.

This is their rightful place,

And I can’t join them, not yet.

I need to change;

Just as the chilling weather

And the reddening leaves.

I must mature just like Fall.

This poem is meant to capture the feelings and sensations that a regular high school student would experience when fall comes.
