Movement Through Words
She moved, curious at first–
But gentle-like.
Had wings and could fly but was hesitant–
Interruption!
Sadness, slowly sinking,
Graceful yet distraught, she twists
Arms out tilting forwards
Not unlike a seesaw
Until suddenly
The pace increases, movements sharp
Angry, desperate, fleeting
Thoughts and words escaping her grasp
A breath of air.
Calming, slowing,
Retreating to solace.
She sighs,
Acceptance, relief flowing through limbs, past tension.
She moves on.

This piece originally stemmed from an exercise I did in a class I took a while back. The class was specifically geared towards helping young dancers express themselves with more than just their movements. In that class, we were told to describe one of the instructors as she improvised, writing down any words or phrases that came to mind while we watched her move. When I revisited my scribbles from this class, I felt inspired to share the words that I put down on the paper, both from my love to dance and my love for writing. I hope that people will be able to envision the dancer as she moves just as I was able to when I revisited my writing.
