The moon shone through the clouds

Onto the ship on which the captain stood

Proud and mighty, both hands on the helm.

He had been warned about the melodious song

That rang throughout the open sea,

The song that dragged men down to Davy Jone’s Lockers

Like an invisible string that pulls them in.

But he was the captain! He heeded no warning!

He sailed the seven seas

There and back again, and then once more.

Whatever he faced, he faced with bared teeth and hooked swords.

Yet there was the song, the song he was warned about,

The sweet voices and angelic hymn.

Splash! The captain jumped and he was in,

In a trance of unspeakable joy and attraction.

He gulped the salty water as he sunk,

Pint after pint, mouthful after mouthful,

Never ending the delirious sensation

Of unspoken pleasure and numbness,

Where nothing mattered and no one remembered.

He drank until his lungs were full

And sank into the darkness,

Falling into the dark depths of blackness,

Falling from grace by his own doing.

This piece depicts the process of how someone becomes addicted to alcohol. Alcoholics know what they are doing is wrong, but they cannot stop doing it. They just keep on drinking to forget about their problems and never acknowledge that drinking is a problem.
