Deceit and I

Deceit and I walk
On a frayed tightrope
On a thin sheet of ice
Covering a lake almost healed from the throws of winter

Deceit and I play
A careful guessing game
To uncover the truth
I no longer know which one of us is lying

Deceit and I dance
And I tread on his toes
But I jump back
Before I leave a lasting mark

Deceit and I were two different beings when we met
They say opposites attract
But looking at him now I see a reflection of myself
A mirror image of a being I do not want to be

So I try to trick deceit
But we’ve been playing this game too long
He knows my every move
And I try to step off his toes
But my heels won’t budge

It’s too late
His shoes are scuffed
The threads snap
The ice cracks
Under the weight of the lies I carry

But before I fall
Before I’m swept away by the current
I see a reflection
Of myself, of him
A reflection of the only thing that can save me from my lies
So I embrace the fall
Right back into the arms of deceit

RJ Walker's "Deceit and I" serves as inspiration for this piece. It's one of the most heartbreaking spoken word poems that I've heard, and I wanted to take a lighter aproach with the title.
