"Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian." ~Dennis Wholey

Slowly, oh so slowly,
She began to fade away
It seemed so very gradual
Until that fateful day

Off the bus, I ran inside
To find my mother there
A box of tissues by her side
Why did she look so scared?

“We need to talk,” she said to me
And so I took a seat
And when I heard the painful news
My heart, it skipped a beat

She told me what the doctor said
About what lay in store
She said that she had Alzheimer’s
Like her father’d had before

I threw myself upon the ground
as tears streamed down my face
The only thing I knew to do
Was run far from that place

So run I did, and run I do,
and run I always will
From all my problems, every day,
Until the world stands still

My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in November of 2010. Her diagnosis inspired this poem.

Love with open hands. - Madeleine L'Engle

Every time I think about this it makes me cry. It wasn't enough that your world came down around your ears once - you started to rebuild it a little and it came tumbling down again. It makes my heart hurt.

Anyway, great poem. <3
