Bones the Space Dog
Bones the Space Dog flies to Pluto
Soaring in his perfect rocket
His mind is set, his body engaged
Plenty of kibble in his pocket
Zoom, zoom, there goes our Bones
Scribbling a trail past Mars
He yearns so he learns to fly in the sky
Faster than his guiding stars
He took a detour: he stops by Venus
To ask for a cup of tea
There he meets Mittens, his beloved kitten
And together they go wheeeee!
Smitten with Mittens, he buys her a rose
And she soon becomes his toy
In return, she gives him a litter of kuppies
Which fills his heart with joy
He looks at his pocket and he sees some room
So he works harder and smarter to fill
The more kibble he gets, the more he wants
But to fill it? He never will
Kitten, kuppies, and kibble
Bones has got it all
But when he looks around the empty space
He always feels so small
So harder and smarter has he bartered
To be just that bit better
Yet he never will beat his ghost rival
The super space setter
Almost at Pluto! Just a week more
Or maybe even a day?
Perhaps he can beat the setter at last
There must be another way
To be faster! Oh, to be faster!
Bones is simply all in
‘Turns on the engines!’ He cries to his kuppies
‘This time, I shall win’
Little does he know that on a track
Not so far away
There flies a meteor, juicier, meatier
Than his little sleigh
Crash! Blast! Clang! Clap!
They collide in slow motion
Pieces explode, floating parts galore
Within the space ocean
And so, for chasing a mere ghost setter
Bones and his family were doomed
The melted away like the dust that they were
And all that were left, were bones.

I wanted to juxtapose the playful nature of a children’s ballad with the jarring ending to give the most distinguished message on the dangers of being an overachiever, something that is usually framed positively in children’s literature. I also referenced the connotation of ‘tea’ as a euphemism famous in the YouTube video about tea and consent.
