He was supposed to hold me close

And tell me I was special

Fight my battles like a prince in armor

And make me feel like with him by my side I was invincible

I wanted him there

Until he showed he clearly didn't care

Breaking promises like they were glass

And leaving my heart shattered with them

He made me feel alone

Like the world was mine to take

In a way, he helped me be stronger

But still, I can't say I love him to his face

He said he tried his best

And that life was cruel to him

He guilted me until I felt like I owed him everything

I should have held him close

And told him he was special

Been there to fight his battles

And showed him he was invincible

Why did I, a little girl not see the pain in his eyes

Pull up my socks, and be there when he needed me the most

He was supposed to be there

He wasn't

And to this day I question if it was all my fault?

The author's comments:

This poem is about my personal relationship with a very important figure in my life. However, it can be related to any relationship in anyone's life. I think the feeling of being unwanted is very common whether it is meant to be or not. At some point in all of our lives, we have felt like we are not valued by a person and that it's our job to make them like us.
