I was born in the year of the Dragon

I never found it fitting

According to Google, a dragon is a mythical monster like a giant reptile.

In Western culture, a dragon is a ferocious fire breathing serpent that falls at the end of a mighty knight’s sword.

In Eastern culture, a dragon is a highly respected being sought after for their wisdom and power.

I am an 18 year old caffeine addict that is barely even seen, barely ever heard.

A girl who loves the sunny days just as much as she loves snow.

I was born in the year of the Dragon

I never found it fitting

I mean there are so many other signs or years I could’ve been born into; like the year of the monkey, or the rabbit, or the sheep, but no

I am a dragon

I am about as far off from such a spirit as the color pink from the color black or from a frog to a giraffe.

I am the high pitched rhythm of a flute’s tune, not the deep confident notes that a saxophone blew.

I am only the light scent of lavender that fades away with breeze

I am not the warm, distinct scent of the coming rain.

I was born in the year of the Dragon

I never found it fitting

I am not like the Dragon

Or maybe I am and I just haven’t noticed.

Just like I haven’t noticed how often I stare at him without meaning to.

Just like I haven’t noticed how I keep my distance from people, and then I wonder why I have no one to talk to

Or how I haven’t noticed that I developed a callus on my right hand because it doesn’t bother me until I grip too hard onto a daydream I know won’t come true, but I grip anyway only hurting myself more.

I was born in the year of the Dragon

And I never found it fitting.
