Elegy to the Forest

The air around this time of year,
It masks the green of the grass.
Tulips just grown fade within the haze
Of the industry we agreed on.
Where is our sun going?
It hides behind the bare branches and thick smoke
That bind the light into none.
“No worry; the invention of mankind
Is a blessing,” we ripped the dying words from her lips,
As we recreate our sun on wires till
We can no longer say it is ours.

Today is for the earth, and its
Children it has given birth.
But why can’t everyday be a way
For the earth’s love to be above
What we call a miracle;
The little blue lights that consume
What little vision we have left,
The vision she has given us?

She did not want this for us,
Now we make her bleed.
She needs our time to
Make things right.
Don’t think of asking
The question of “when?”

When will we die?
When will we let our
sustenance go?
When are you going to
Save yourself
From yourself?

When will this society realize
Our time is nearing?
When will the time come for even
One human to love the mother
Who is sacrificing her life
For us?

On Earth Day this year, I had a different opinion about the holiday than most people that riles me up.
