In the town of syracuse, New York, there is a high school lacrosse team called the OJ’s. They were once known around the whole country for their consistent appearance at the state finals. They once had a six year streak, and out of those six; they won four. The team was close and the players were like brothers. They had played with each other since middle school and the team chemistry and trust was extraordinary. But then the unimaginable happened.
Coach, McCoy was an inspirational genius. The boys loved him and the town respected him. He was there for the boys on and off the field and was a icon to the OJ’s lacrosse program. On his way to practice, he was sending a quick email to booster for the team. The message was never sent because Coach McCoy flipped his car over the side guard on a bridge and his car was thrown into the mouth of the river, the same river the team swims in after every home game victory.  The email read, “That’s great Gary, the boys are going to be so excited, can’t wait to hear back from you.” This was the last thought Coach McCoy had about his team but more importantly his family away from home.
Practice starts at 4:30, team captain and all time goal point leader, Brian Jenkins lead the team onto the field without coach. “ let’s go boys, today is going to be a good day, coach isn’t here yet but we’ll get started” said Brian. These were the words every one wished were true. As the team was stretching, they saw ambulances and fire trucks racing by the field. “Man somebody got messed up” said one of the inexperienced freshman.”
With a sharp and quick snappy response Brian said, “Shut up two six, get your mind right for practice.” As the boys were finishing up stretching, they saw two patrol cars pull up to the field. “Looks like they’re coming for you Brian,” said Cole, Brian’s best friend. Next came the words that would change this lacrosse program forever, “Good afternoon gentlemen, I’m sorry to inform you that your coach has been in a serious car accident and he didn’t make it out. I suggest you all wrap up practice and go home for the day.” There was silence for the next few minutes. As Brian lead the team back into the locker room, there was no talking from anyone. They players got undressed and everyone left. Brian stuck around to make sure everything got locked up.
As Brian drove home, He asked himself, how? Why? Is this going to be the fall of the OJ’s? All very good questions.  The next few weeks the team had no coach, and no motivation to practice. Brian decided the only thing to do at this point was find a new coach. “Hey dad do you think you could help coach the lacrosse team?”
“Well that’s a pretty big commitment isn’t it?”
“Yeah but we really need a coach right now”
“I have a buddy that I think could help you guys out, let me give him a call.”
Brian was thrilled, a few days went by and his dad had not said anything yet, so Brian rallied the team together for a captain lead practice. About 30 minutes into practice a big black lifted truck with wide set wheels pulled in. “Who the hell is this tool”, said cole.
“I don’t know, stay here i’ll be back”, replied Brian. As Brian walked over to the truck, a man stepped out. “You Brian?” said the man.
“Yeah who are you?”
“Well, I believe your new coach, Coach Taylor, nice to meet you.”
Brian brought Coach Taylor over to the rest of the team. “Morning boys, I’m Coach Taylor, I know I am not Coach McCoy but all i’m asking is for you guys to play your ass off and i’ll do anything for you guys in return. Let’s make it a good day, state finals are in 2 weeks”
Brian was on his way to school and the radio came on, “It’s game day here in Cuse, the undefeated OJ’s will be taking on New York Prep for the state finals.” This was the first game since Coach McCoy had passed away. The boys had put together a nice pregame speech for their very missed coach, and then it was game time. By the end of the first quarter the OJ’s we up 2-0. It was obvious that the boys were playing hard to honor their coach. Going into the third quarter the OJ’s found themselves in a pretty big hole at a 8-5 deficit. With 5 minutes left go in the game Coach Taylor called a timeout. “Listen boys, you can either go out there and hang your heads and wait for time to run out, or you can go out there and play for a new beginning and mark where you want this outstanding program to go.”
Brian brought the team together, “Cuse on 3, 1...2...3 CUSE!”
With 5 minutes up on the board, the players took the field. Brian stepped up to the faceoff X, “Down, set” said the ref....and the whistle blew. With ease Brian won the faceoff and went all the way to cage and put in a quick goal. 8-6. Then 2 more were scored. 8-7 with 3:30 left on the clock. NYP had possession up until 30 seconds was left on the clock. All the OJ’s needed was one more to take the game into overtime. The ball came down on a fast break, they worked it like tic tac toe 1 pass second pass and then bang, a ripper from the wing. “ I can’t believe it folks, the game is tied at 8’s” said the announcer.
After the boys came out of the locker room, it was game time, time to put this game away. Once again Brian won the faceoff and the boys had plenty of time to take it easy and work it around. Then the chance came. Brian dodged from up top, then he was tripped. But with an unbelievable BTB pass to Cole with a string finish, the OJ’s had won the game! “I can’t believe it, the OJ’s are the sate champions once again,” said the announcer.
