Father
Defining terms can be so very loose.
Admittedly he was never there.
Does being a father mean to reproduce?
A father pours in his time, like water pours from a sluice.
When the first step of a child is taken, a father should be aware.
Defining terms can be so loose.
A father supports his child with no excuse,
He loves them unconditionally, with genuine care.
Does being a father mean to reproduce?
A man left my mother and I to the noose,
But a man I wish was my father untied us and gave us air.
Defining terms can be so very loose.
One man left a child to be recluse.
Another man found treasure that he would lift from despair.
Does being a father mean to reproduce?
18 years and a man come back, but the loss was profuse.
I can forgive, but never will I forget, that he made my mother live a nightmare.
The real father here wore no such label, defining terms can be so very lose.
My real father was a man... who never did reproduce.

From the time I was born all the way up until now (my senior year of highschool) I have encountered my biological father a total of five times, and of those five times there were only two occurances in which I was old enough to realize what what going on. This piece was not written to bash my biological father, as I still am his son and have a certain connection with him, but instead the piece Father was written in order to call attention to what a father really is. After my father left my mother and I we struggled, but a man came into our life and changed all of that. He made my mother happy, and he made me the young man I am today. This Villanelle style poem emphasizes the fact that being a father does not stricly mean to be a birth parent, but instead it is a roll that somebody takes.
