Voices
I hear the whispers in my ear
Telling me who to be and what to feel
“Don’t Go,” “You Can’t,” “Stay Away”
Threatening punishment if I disobey
And I know, deep down, that they may be right
All the torture and pain that comes with the fight
The fight against time, the fight against life.
The whispers are getting much more extreme
And are sounding less like whispers and more like screams
Like a riptide, they are dragging me under
And from my dream trying to lead me asunder
Ripping us further and farther apart
Until I question why I would even start
Start questioning the voices that now make so much sense
How could I ever have been so dense?
Everyone hears the voices
