Old Broken City
This old broken city
How you were so innocent,
Til’ one mistake
Became more than an incident.
Children were always peaceful
No caution night or day,
Now only one is at peace
And his name is Freddie Gray.
Protesting six days peacefully
No one heard their cry,
In order to be heard
One must risk their own life.
Building set ablaze
Cars burned to the ground,
Is this what it took
To hear Baltimore resound?
You could’ve listened first
But you waited too long instead,
Now this old broken city…
Shall be broken once again.

When I had to make a poem about an unforgettable moment, I thought of what was going on around us. At the time, the Baltimore Riot of 2015 occured days before. I felt I was called to make this poem to understand why this catastrophe had to happen.
