Thirteen Ways To Look At a Cup Of Coffee
(Based on the Thirteen Ways of Looking At a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens)
I.
The tainted smell that fills the room,
as you first start to open your eyes.
The smell of coffee brewing,
as it fills the house.
II.
The boiling sound,
the brewer makes.
You walk down to the kitchen,
kiss your family good morning.
III.
First sip of the pot.
So hot.
Now tongue is tingling,
regretting,
but still sipping.
IV.
A teacher,
pouring that first cup of coffee before class.
The only peaceful thing he can turn to,
when the kids drive him insane.
V.
An old married couple,
sitting on the front porch.
Rocking their lives away,
with matching mugs in one hand
and each others hands in another.
VI.
A first date two couples meet,
in a little cafe downtown.
Having small talk,
while sipping on mocha.
VII
Your typical white girl,
wearing her uggs.
Ordering her usual cappuccino,
that tastes like straight creamer.
VII.
A little kid with a petrified look,
frightened of when his mom walks in the room.
As she sees the black coffee stain on the new white carpet.
IX.
1:00am with books all over her dorm.
Trying to stay awake,
by pouring a cup of caffeine.
With an entire cup of sugar,
just to get through the night.
X.
The depressed teenaged girl,
locked up in her room.
Heart broken.
Drinking the black drink
that matches the color of her broken heart.
XI.
Father and daughter bonding time,
sitting in the tree stand.
Sipping on black coffee,
while waiting for that monster buck to appear.
XII.
While feeling depressed,
empty inside.
A cup of coffee consumed,
filling the emptiness
that has built up internally.
XIII.
The smell of the fresh coffee filling the air.
The kind her grandfather would make every morning
bringing back joyful memories of him,
before the cancer took over.
