"Doll"
In the voice of Maya Angelou
Pale white skin, long blonde hair, blue eyes
perfect bow, perfect dress
I always wanted to look just like that doll
the one my mother sent me
Maybe if I looked like it,
she wouldn't have
left.
I didn't choose my color, given the choice back when I was little
I would've changed in a heartbeat
Maybe if I looked like it,
I wouldn't have been mocked and made fun of,
Wouldn't have been denied help when i was sick,
wouldn't have had such a hard time getting into school.
It's amazing, when they tell you so often that you are something you're not, you believe them.
But given the choice now, I wouldn't change a thing
the only thing I hate about myself now is that it took
so long for me to realize that black was beautiful
Black is beautiful
and once i realized that, I realized what it was like to be
truly happy.
