You Can't Write a Poem about Injuries
August. Sitting is the only thing
I am doing.
I sit on the benches on the sidelines,
on the practice field,
past the second week of practicing,
I am still sitting.
Screaming in frustration and depression
at myself for injuring myself
at the park in Bailey Park
It is a careless and foolish injury.
I get my time wasted by waiting to get my cast off
all around me are sick people waiting
to get a doctor
to make them feel better
some have flesh wounds or sickness
hip injuries or head injuries
When I finally get a doctor
Her skin is tan as bronze
her face as pretty as a model
Suddenly I feel better
As I ask a question
she breaks my hope
my arm rewrapped to go on my way.
I’m thinking, how frustrating it is
to know that I am out for the season, how easy
it is to get yourself hurt.
I leave with a cast, warm inside and a solid outside.
I sit back on the benches
a young man dreams fried
sitting in the boiling sun
the crowd cheering on the team
that is singing in my ears
making my day
in this world.
