The Barricade
The people build and build until a barricade rises.
They shoot, bleed, and sweat until they are no more.
The rest mourn their passing.
We discover that the people sang for freedom.
Passion in their hearts, they pledged liberty.
Preaching and cheering, they fought and died.
The people build and build until a barricade rises.
They are besieged by the powerful and beg for help.
They go out screaming; the powerful cheer.
The rest mourn their passing.
It’s revealed they’re abandoned in the final day.
Solemn and week, they promise death in the next hour.
Yet, they build and build until a barricade rises.
Now it’s known the deeds at the barricade, forever known.
The renegades, the people at the barricade, die in vain.
Dismantled, like the renegades’ bodies, the barricade is gone.
The rest mourn their passing.

I was inspired to write this after I watched Les Miserables for the first time. I loved the raw emotion of the characters as the story is told.
