the song of the caged bird

I am the caged bird
Hear me sing
My tied feet
My shattered wings
I sing of freedom
You may have guessed
Freedom from this
Inescapable mess
The song that emerges
From my collapsed lungs
One that I
Have already sung
I scream and yelp
As loud as I can
For happiness seems
Like something banned
I cannot leave
The jail in my mind
On sadness it lives
On despair it thrives
Only when I crawl
Out from under my skin
Can my longed-for flight
Really begin
But my wings are bloody
My feet are bound
And not a drop of life
Is found
I cannot leave
And so I sing
For the taste of life
That music brings
The smiles faked
No joy left
The cage is my mind
The key is death
