A Silencing Room
As I walk down the long aisle, I decelerate my pace
My head turns in every direction to admire what I see
Corinthian columns guide me to the front of the cathedral
Murals are everywhere: instructing and teaching
Darkness surrounds me as I enter
A few windows and lanterns barely scatter light throughout the massive building
The stained glass impedes much of the sunlight from outside
I expected more radiance from this coastal city
My peers whipser in hushed voices while a banal tour guide explains the magnificent
architecture
“click click click”
Adults are the paparazzi, trying to include every nook and cranny in their photographs
In the corner, you can hardly make out the murmurs of an individual praying to the Lord
Why build such a grand Italian cathedral in a small Georgia town?
Some how everything makes me want to stop and learn all the history behind each and every drawing, painting, or carving. How can every single piece of art each express a story more than 1000 words?
My surroundings stun the vision in my brain
I cannot believe how beautiful but baffling everything is
I shiver-
Not just because of the temperature
It feels as if a spirit is ubiquitous, lurking in every corner
A chancel holds an altar that presides over the building
The colossal house of God makes me feel tiny and insignificant
Observing…
Observing…
Observing…
