A young east African girl
Travels halfway across the world
To be safe in the land of the free
Her pain is what we can’t see
As she tries to fight her tears
Her voice is so sincere
But those eyes don’t lie
She witnessed her mother die
Grew up without a father
Lil sis died from dirty water
No family so she’s all alone
Has to act like she’s all grown
See she comes from a nation
With a decrease in population
From war and starvation
All her people are dying
And it seems like no one is trying
To save her and her kind
From the evil of mankind
But she’s tired of being a victim
In this messed up system
Says education is key
So she gets her degree
And sets her people free

My family is from Somalia. I wanted to write a poem about teenagers that come to the United States looking for a better life. My poem is basically about a Somali girl that comes to the United States after she's been through so much. She goes to school and gets a degree. Many people believe education is the way out of poverty. So that's what the "Young East African Girl" in my poem does!
