How the War Started
Maddie had no rights. She loved working for her owner, but it was getting to be too much. She thought she had to do something. So Maddie went up to her owner (Max) and smacked him across the face.
Max’s wife, Lilly, was standing there and started to laugh. Of course Max and Lilly was rich-white people, Maddie was colored.
Max was the only person in that house; who thought slavery was appropriate. He did, however, have many friends who thought it was too.
Lilly thought about leaving Max many times, but she was still pregnant. 8 ½ months pregnant to be exact… And her family didn’t have the money. So if she ever did leave, she would be alone with a baby that she would have to give away. Leaving was not an option.
Max held his face and back-handed Maddie. Maddie of course, screamed. She ran away from Max to cool down and went to her ‘family’ to ask what they would do...
They declared war. So war all started when Maddie didn’t like her owner and she got one slap across the face. Maddie won the war. All the colored people got all the rights, whites did, maybe even more. Max died and Lilly was spared because she didn’t like her husband’s decisions. Lilly also got all of Max’s money plus the two children they already had. She later gave birth to a wonderful baby girl named, Grace.
