The Mourning Day
I wake up,
I can smell it in the air,
I cringe.
It seems like only yesterday.
I walk the same path,
Down the same trail,
Over this same bridge,
Every year.
It seems like only yesterday.
They say the pain will fade,
They say I should again give,
Love a chance.
They do not understand,
It seems like only yesterday.
It was a beautiful day,
The sparkling sun streaming,
Through the wooded trees,
You confessed your love for me,
It seems like only yesterday.
It has been fourteen years today,
I walk home from that place,
Through a bustling town,
Don’t they know?
Did they forget?
It seems like only yesterday.
I’m overtaken then,
With emotion I wish to express,
I yearn for love once more,
The kind I felt that day.
It seems like only yesterday.
I raise my head,
I see his face,
In it I see comfort,
Warmth,
And sweet embrace.
He smiles.
Too bad he doesn’t know,
It seems like only yesterday.
