The crowd cheered loudly as I stepped up, giving it my all
and hoping today would be the day I impressed the
team with a play that was needed and exciting.
I watched the pitcher, noticing every small detail
of how he moved and how he positioned the ball. Of
all the pitches I’d seen, this one felt different. The
second it left his hand it felt like a chase.
I swung hard, the bat hitting with power, and
the ball shot into the sky while the outfielders ran the
fastest they could, trying to make an escape.
But the ball dropped cleanly in the gap, earning the
cheers of my teammates while the other team made an error.
A single pitch feels like a flash, my mind steady and focused, full of
the joy of making the right play, a moment of genius.

My name is Patrick and I am a student writer submitting my piece called Baseball golden shovel (from ¨The Crowd at The Ball Game by William Carlos Williams) to publish. I wrote this poem as a school assignment in my creative writing class and it focuses on a person perspective on playing a baseball game. I chose this topic because it allowed me to express my ideas and creativity in my writing. I hope readers can imagine what is happening during the baseball game and feel the emotions the player had felt.
