The Rainbow River
The rainbow river
Reflecting the illuminated sky
Full of life
And nothing more
The trees crafted the atmosphere
Like a black-painted silhouette
The contrast is quite uncanny
As if it was protecting the other
And that ethereal orb
In that very sky
Shining down on the rainbow river
The last piece to be seen
The colors melted in the water
Softly swirling fluidly
Like oil spilling
All you can see is within it

This piece is an imagist poem about a picture I took 2 summers ago, at a campsite in Potosi, Wisconsin. We were there for the Fourth of July to have a great spot to view the fireworks that evening but I saw something even better. I could see the gorgeous sky at the time, perfectly mirroring the Mississippi River with trees embracing it. The moon was centered beautifully in the background, tying the whole scene together. What was so interesting about this photograph I wrote about was that I had never pictured the Mississippi River to be that beautiful before. Nowadays, our rivers in America look not as great as we want them to be, but in that very moment, I saw the true beauty of the Ole Miss. What I'm advocating for in this piece is to appreciate the beauty in what's around us, instead of going through the motions as always. Just stop and take a look at that view of nature every once in a while, because later in life, you may not have anymore.
