I am from my family,

The long lost and the well known.

I am from the Eden’s here and the Renken’s there.

I am from Destiny’s Child & Blink 182,

From the music my parents would blast,

And the food my mom would prepare.

I am from our most known jokes

Far from sincere.

I am from The Great Wide Open,

A small state named Oklahoma.

I am from my memories,

The poor or the ones of prosperity.

From the ones I create,

And the ones that I am given.

I'm from the memories that constantly fill my head,

Never sure which to forget.

I am from the admiration my grandmother instilled,

From the pieces of her that still live inside me.

I’m from the dreams she found for me,

And the love of all things beautiful.

I am from loving being in her shadow,

And wishing she was still here.

I am from the sports that wake me,

Aswell as the ones that tire me.

I’m from Tecumseh Volleyball

And the friendships it produced,

Aswell as the gyms that I’ve used.

I am from the decisions I have made,

Both good and bad.

I’ve been shaped by my surroundings.

Waking up and worrying about my looks,

And how others see me.

Comparing myself once I walk through the school doors,

I am a spy listening and watching my peers.

I am from a constant school environment,

From waking up to teachers,

And going to sleep surrounded by them.

I am from high expectations,

From the “Do your best” & “Try harder”.

I am from the, “You should know this”

once the letter grade goes down. (Consonance)

I am from constant comparisons

I inflict on myself.

I am from the hypocrisy of my mind

The “I want to be them” being snapped into “They should want to be me”.

Through the mix of selfishness and selflessness.

I am from the constant need to be the best,

And the overwhelming fear that I’m not.

But I will always be from my mind and my memories,

Day by day,

Constantly changing.

This poem is an emulation of "Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyon. I wrote this about myself and where I am from.
