Acquainted with the Night
Oh -- the Night, the insolent dark black Night
Is both my bane and my delight
Swirling inks from horizon rise
To gobble the Sun and swallow the sky
The echo of our demise
It crawls through windows, snuffs out light
Insidious with reproachful might
Chasing, creeping, up it weaves
A shining onyx tapestry
The eternal, gaping maw
Studded with gleaming, distant stars
Fireflies trapped within a jar
Lay bare the mysteries of the air
That permeates Earth and everywhere
Astounding, inscrutable beauty
I am acquainted with the Night.

I admire the harsh beauty of the night-- it can be cold and dangerous yet breathtakingly stunning. I have often stargazed at night and let my mind wander through the mysteries of the universe.
