Where I'm from
I’m from pulling all-nighters on school nights,
from drinking Red Bulls and Monsters just to stay awake during the long school hours.
From camping every summer, to going to the fair for every birthday I have.
I’m from going house to house every other weekend,
from having 2 christmases every year.
I’m from spending summers with grandparents,
from going on little adventures where I could learn something new.
I’m from going on nature walks with my family,
from the sound of sticks breaking when I stepped on them and the feeling of leaves crunching under my feet.
From warm sunday dinners,
from the smell of pumpkin candles billowing throughout the house.
I’m from a dysfunctional family,
from arguments to fights.
I’m from panic attacks,
from music being the only escape from reality.
From spending so much time with cousins that they start to feel like siblings.
I’m from heartbreak,
from betrayal,
from people letting you down because the didn’t stick with their word.
I’m from watching mom and dad fight.
From not eating dinner together is the normal thing in my family.
I’m from big family gatherings.
From depression to pain,
from hiding how you feel because you don’t want to hurt people's feelings.
I’m from a supportive family,
from self growth and love.

I wrote this poem to explain how I grew up and how most of my life has been somewhat different from other peoples. I also wrote this so someone out there could relate to this poem and not feel so alone.
