The Dark Side of Life
Everyone loves this thing called “life”
They say it's a blessing to be alive
Yet I think it brings nothing but strife
It's hard enough to even survive
So just give up, just comply
We all will anyway someday die
So what's the point, why do we try
Try so hard to be remembered
When in a million years,
The planet will be dismembered
Some say we’ve come a long way
But does it matter if we’ll all decay?
Innovation won’t last that long
And in the process we’ve hurt loved ones
We’ve hurt the very Earth who helped us become
But you know, I once used treasure my life
I had hoped and dreamed, even believed
I searched and searched for paradise
Now I realize how I had been so naïve
All it left me was heartache, sorrow,
And piles of work to finish tomorrow
Everyone says live life to the fullest
But they’re all blind and clueless
Life in your chest is just a bullet
It's cruel, unjust, and forever ruthless
How will we ever hope to flourish,
In this graveyard of unfulfilled wishes

I would like to start by acknowledging how unique and creative this magazine is. Reading through all the different styles of literature and looking at all of the artistic elements included is something I value in this magazine. Since this magazine is centered around my age group, I can resonate with some of the personal stories and even gain motivation to write my own original pieces after reading through others creative work. Its a place where teens like myself can come together and have their work displayed for others to read and take inspiration from.
I myself have been writing poetry for about a year as a way to relieve stress and its something I enjoy while doing. I also take pride in my work and a dream of mine has been to publish my poetry so when opportunities such as this one come along, I try to select one of my best pieces.
This piece in particular is about emotions centered around hopelessness, depression, and despair. I wrote this piece because in society nowadays, there is a lot of pressure put on kids to grow up and get the best education, the best job, etc. and this causes a lot of stress to build up. Sometimes, you want to succumb to the feeling that you won't accomplish anything so why try and this is what I wanted to capture in the poem.
Thank you for your time and I hope you find my poetry a good edition to your magazine!
