Spinning
S p i n n i n g , S p i n n i n g ,
I liked the way my terrycloth robe
 puffed out around my small,
 frail, body---
 So I spun faster,
 faster still
 My mother’s warning came
too late, “Don’t spin too fast”
 I didn’t believe her
 until I was truly
 F a l l i n g , F a l l i n g ,
 A comforting wave of black
 came
like the tide of a great
 ocean of darkness moving
 in, slapping the shore.
 The white kitchen tile greeted
 me like an old friend,
 embracing me with cold,
 stiff arms---
My mother has only had to call 911 twice in her life—
 once was for me.
