Our Heart's Acknowledgment (After W.S. Merwin)
Because of the happiness that a new day brings, we say thank you
Children are suffering in silence, and we are saying thank you
As the world turns,
We scream our despair out into the universe and say
Thank you
Smiles are fading from everyone’s faces and yet
We are saying thank you
Back from the wedding between sorrow and destruction, we return and say
Thank you
Back from an afternoon party
We smile and say thank you
We are saying thank you for the song that described our lives with one note
We are saying thank you for the relatives that were with us every step of the way
As the earth runs dry, we say thank you
As we spill our thoughts onto a paper
We sigh in relief and say thank you
Rushing back from the dark alley of our lost dreams
We say thank you
With tears running down our faces
We say thank you
With sadness pumping through our veins
We say thank you
As our hopes are snatched away from us, we say thank you
As our hearts finally fill with newfound freedom
We say
Thank you.
