Eyelids flutter open on a lovely morning,

Greeted by the smell of soft cookies and roasted ham,

Ready for the feast of the magical night.

The stockings wait just as impatient as the children,

Swaying slightly side to side,

And the children's stomachs murmur,

Triggered by the wafting smell of baked potatoes,

fresh out the angry, overworked oven.

Snowball fights, and snowmen building occupy the waiting children,

While snowflakes scatter from the sky,

Melting into their delicate skin,

Turning their cheeks a light, rosy pink.

Running inside,

Grandma cordially greets them with rich, dark hot cocoa,

Filled with fluffy marshmallows and endearing love,

Made to keep their small, frigid hands warm.

After filling watering mouths with eggnog and spiced turkey,

Children race to the tree to open the glittering boxes,

Excitement shining through their eyes as they take in the display.

Suddenly, sounds of ripped paper engulf the room.

Toys are being handed from child to child.

Clicks and flashing lights escape cameras,

And happiness and joy fill the entire room.

Later that day,

Kids eyes fill with sadness,

Realizing they have to wait another year,

But mom remarks “be happy and thankful my children,

For every day, can have Christmas cheer!”

I wanted to write something that represents the joy, smells, and sounds of Christmas day. This poem contains a lot of imagery to represent this.
