The Object
He stood there, torn and ragged holding cardboard. It read- “help” in black. I walked next to him. He had a pleading look in his eyes. I put my hand in my pocket and jingled some change. I looked at the sign once more. He fumbled in his hand a rectangular object. I recognized what it was- I couldn’t give him the change. It would destroy him. I looked at him. It began to rain. Then I turned and walked away.

The concepts I’m working on for this set-piece are 1st person and short sentences as shown through the story. I like how I didn’t make the ending super clear and left it to the reader to decide what the “object” was.
