Goodbye
Is my time up in this world?
Not quite, but you’re nearing the end.
Can you tell my son my last words?
Sure, anything for a friend.
Tell him that I’ll always be there for him;
In his heart, and in his memories.
And if he starts feeling grim?
Surround him with love that would last for centuries.
Where is Mama going to be?
She’ll be in a better place.
Where she can be free;
Covered by love’s embrace.
Why did she have to go?
It wasn’t her decision to make.
Then who called the crows?
Nothing is certain, except that it was fate.
All around, surrounded by love.
Now an empty cast of what once was.
Will I ever see her again?
In my dreams or in the clouds above?
Keep her in your heart, and you’ll see even her flaws.

This poem was inspired by the death of my aunt. Though she was not my mother, I was very close to her son, my cousin, and I could feel his pain and agony when she passed. I wrote this poem to recapture the moment and the very real conversations that were happening at that time. I hope to send a message of hope and resilience in a time of agony and adversity to those who are experiencing similar situations.
