Like a Phoenix, I Rise
You appeared out of nowhere
And felt just like a nightmare.
It was clear you were not a friend,
But I tried and tried to pretend.
Before I even got out of bed,
Your voice was yelling inside my head.
I heard you everywhere I went
And listened to all your comments.
I changed myself completely for you.
I was like a toy, brand-new.
But finally, I had had enough.
I told you it was time to give up.
I fought you long and hard
Until you were no more.
Although you left me scarred,
I learned to love myself more.
Self-hate, you were like a laser beam
trying to destroy my self-esteem.
But now, I am stronger
And you will haunt me no longer.

I wrote this for an English project. It mimics Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not Stop for Death."
