Ce n’est pas Grave (Ode to My Boyfriend’s Totaled Car)
O’ red car with the bright tape on the back,
It was impossible to ignore you.
We would joke and call you ugly, although,
Red used to be my favorite color.
December 2nd we started dating
In your backseats in the church parking lot.
He considered selling you, and I thought
About maybe saving up to buy you.
He told me how you were hit by a truck
When driving with his sister, hence the tape.
Some minor damage, so resilient...
Until the accident with the school bus.
Two weeks ago, it feels like yesterday.
We were okay but sadly, you were not.
A wheel came off, your right side was caved in.
Towed you away before we said goodbye.
Until he saves up for a new used car,
I drive us in the one I share with Mom.
We drive past the lot you’re in all the time -
Steven has seen you in there, I have not.
I miss you a lot and I don’t know why.
We liked you more than you would ever know.
That being said, ce n’est pas grave because
Eventually, like people, all cars die.
