Down south, in Alabama to be correct.

Before anyone stepped a foot off that bus,

everything went wrong.

He was sitting in the aisle seat, about to get up,

as he heard a trickle of a smoke bomb fall down the aisle.

A loud bang had everyone shockingly looking around,

the sharp sound rang everyone’s ear drums.

Many ran frantically to find the exit and get off.

The man escapes the trap of gas and

runs out to the street to sit on the curb to catch his breath.

Coughing from the thick smoke that suffocated his lungs.

Passing through the state of strong belief was said to be hard,

especially knowing you're spreading something that goes against it.

A black women with a dream to feel equal, stood on the sidewalk shocked,

staring at the burning bus as a tear ran down her cheek,

the Sorrow that the symbolization of freedom has been taken

and restricted from at least one breath.

The freedom she strived to give her 3 year old daughter back at home that,

she could be apart of “The New Frontier”

she could be apart of unfulfilled hopes

she could be apart of unfulfilled dreams.

Dreams to be able to feel that she was herself,

to go to a school with ALL the children and

to be apart of her own story.

A poem based on the freedom riders. I got inspiration from this peice from an actual picture taken during the protest.
